be ready, winter sales will begin in Rome soon.Winter sales 2010 have been in principle scheduled for January the 2nd and should last for six weeks. This date however is not 100% sure as the Retailers Association is trying to postpone the date at January the 16th. Christmas sales could be in fact seriously affected by the early date of January the 2nd. THE STARTING DATE IS NOW SURE: BE READY TO BARGAIN FOR JANUARY THE 2ND!

Count down for traditional winter sales in Rome! Soon the most awaited event of the year will start! Hundreds of eager shoppers will line up and “box”outside the stores in the hope of finding the ultimate bargain.Hundreds the place to go! All the big-name fashion designers can be found in the Quadrilatero, close to Spanish Steps in Via Condotti, Via Frattina and Via del Babuino. If you prefer equally elegant shops, on a smaller scale, head for Via del Governo Vecchio and surroundings amongst the most fashionable shopping streets in Rome.
Many stores will start the day with queues of bargain hunters.
Should winter sales begin January the 2nd, when the Romans are usually out of town, many clients in the more expensive areas will be bargaining from Russia, Japan and the Middle East.
Sales are strictly regulated by art. 15 of Legislative Decree no. 114 of 1998. Each Regions then rule precise “authorised dates” and length thereof. Sales can only take place between the authorised dates and each item shall provide for both the original and discounted price as well as for the discount percentage. Sale items can be purchased with credit cards and cannot be changed unless they are somehow defective.

Do these usually cover all stores? Or is it usually just onyl ‘made in Italy’ stores?
What are the approximate sale sizes? Is it like 10% first week, 20% second for what’s left, 30% on thirds, etc?

Both winter and summer sales cover all stores not only “made in Italy stores”. The percentage of the rebate depends on each shop. It is common practice in some of the shops to start with a percentage at the very beginning of sales and to increase said percentage during the following weeks. It is not uncommun however to have a given percentage lasting for the entire period. In other words, no rules…

The starting date of summer sales 2010 have’nt been decided yet. You may want to consider that last year began on July the 4th and lasted for 6 weeks. I’ll keep you posted as soon as more precise information is available. Regards, Valeria

Well 2 years ago when i was in Rome, the summer sales had just begun and the date was 12 July. My mom who is a total shopaholic, says that it is the approximate date for all europe to go on Sale..

thank you so much for the quick reply. is it worth our while to see those outlets outside florence during our 3 day stay there? we are planning 3 days in florence and 3 days in rome so far. one of us is interested in the prada outlet in florence…

well, I have to admit that I’m not able to answer your question as to whether or not it is worthwhile to spend one day (out of three days) in Florence outlets … in fact in one hand Florence has so much to offer from all perspectives (museums, arts, culture, shopping, restaurants) that also three days are not enough to have a good knoledge of the city…
in the other hands outlets are always appealing even if sometimes finding the best items is also a question of luck!
Maybe our readers can help you to take a decision by reporting their “outlets” experiences!!! We wait for your comments!!!

thank you so much. will be leaving soon for the shopping sales. btw, is it true that sales in florence is a week after rome? we have been to italy before, just not during the sales….
there is an ugly rumor that most items from fendi is made in china. please say it isn’t true…though i have noticed the last 3 fendi bags i bought were of inferior quality: threads come off easily, seams come undone at the bottom of the bag, leather from the glue disintegrates…and all these items came from the fendi stores themselves… -
it depends on the single outlet actually. In case please let me know which are those you are interested the most as the list is long and a generic answer on how to reach each outlet can be very difficult!

Items from Fendi are made in China? Well, if it is written made in Italy, items should have been made in Italy and not in China… Maybe are made from Chinese people residing in Italy as Italy is full of laboratories with Chinese manpower… -

I’ve been shopping in the last few days like a crazy… big fun in Roma with the sales!!!
Not only lot of things for me but also for my little kid (one year old). Now he has a brand new wardrobe… wow how many beautiful shops for kids in Rome! I had no clou! Maybe after the post regarding the outlets I’ll follow with one with the best shops for kids in Rome!And you, what did you buy?

Could someone advise me if the sales in Rome will be stopped formally 6 weeks after 2nd of Jan? We are planning to be in Rome in the end of Feb this year and will be a very unpleasant surprise if there is no sale then.

This is Dalia who has asked before about the summer sale My friend is having a conference in mid June in Rome and we would all love to be together… is there anyway for early sale… we are going to amalfi coast on the 20th of June and coming back to Rome on the 25th of June.. is there any chance for some sale then… or should we wait till July.
Another advise which area is best for accomodation in Rome? I will check your website for sure for accomodation.

I’m afraid you should wait until July… early sales are not allowed unless you are a well-known client of a boutique… in this case it may happen to be offered some early sales even if forbidden by the law.
In my view the best area for accommodation in Roma are:
1) Spanish Steps (great also for shopping!) Have a look for instance at this new apartment:
