Castel Sant’Angelo

If you’ll decide to stay in the Campanella apartment (Piazza Navona area), you will be a few steps away from Castel Sant’Angelo : one of the most fascinating monument in Rome. This structure was built as a mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian, between 135 and 139 AD. Subsequent strongholds built on top of the mausoleum were in turn incorporated into a residence and castle by medieval Popes. Until 1870 Castel Sant’Angelo was used as a prison , but now houses a museum, well worth a visit.
