Vatican Museums
One of the most important museum complexes in the world, the Vatican Museums are divided into numerous splendidly arranged sections containing masterpieces by the greatest artists, which were collected or commissioned by Popes down through the centuries. At the end of the itinerary is the Sistine Chapel, masterpiece of Michelangelo, where the recent restoration has brought to light the original colours of the vault and Michelangelo’s Last Judgement, which time had darkened.

St. Peter square
This harmonious elliptical square is one of the finest work of Bernini, built to enhance and magnify the entrance of the mother of all churches. 240 meters wide with 284 Doric columns each 19 meters high, set in four serried rows.
St. Peter Basilica
The largest and most beautiful church in the world. Some of the highlights: the statue of Pietà by Michelangelo, the statue of St Peter by Maderno, the Baldacchino by Bernini. Top of the dome: climb the 537 steps for a breathless but deathless view over the world.
Ponte Sant’Angelo
One of Rome’s most ancient bridges and certainly the most beautiful. It’s Baroque statuary is from Bernini’s studio, but the three central spans are attributed to emperor Hadrian.
National Museum of Castel Sant’Angelo
Built by emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his successors, Castel Sant’Angelo was later transformed into a fortress and then into a prison. Today it holds an important art and military museum. From the terraces breathless view. Information and reservations: +39-06-39967600
The area of Prati (“Meadows”): takes its name from Prata Neronis, emperor Nero’s agricultural land, and from the gardens and fields which characterised the area, which was isolated from the city centre, up until the end of the 19th century.
