This vacation rental apartment is right in between Piazza di Spagna and Piazza Barberini.
The Spanish Steps, a monumental stairway, of 138 steps was built by Francesco de Santis between 1723 and 1725 to link the piazza to Pincio and Villa Medici above. The steps can be climbed very easily because the architect had included benches and small resting spaces between one ramp and the next. The square is very original in shape, with a narrowing at the centre which divides it into two parts, almost like a butterfly’s wings.
The piazza has always being the meeting places for travellers coming e ifrom all over the world. The international nature is even stressed by the presence of the diplomatic offices of both France and Spain, which of course, influenced the name of the piazza itself.
The piazza is wonderful beginning of May due to the world-famous flower show, when the steps are covered with blossommed azaleas and each July in occasion of evening fashion show. Every 8 December, the city’s firemen, in the presence of the pope, pay hommage to the Virgin by placing a floral wreath on the staue.
Piazza Barberini lies at the end of Via Sistina. You’ll find Bernini’s Fountain of the Triton (Fontana del Tritone). For more than 3 centuries, the strange figure sitting in a vast open clam has been blowing water from his triton. Off to one side of the piazza is the aristocratic side facade of the Palazzo Barberini, named for one of Rome’s powerful families; inside is the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica . The Renaissance Barberini reached their peak when a son was elected pope as Urban VIII; he encouraged Bernini and gave him great patronage.
